While you may think this image is from a galaxy far far away… In fact this beautiful nebula and star cluster are actually only 2700 parsecs away.
NGC 2264 is the designation number of the New General catalogue that identifies 2 astronomical objects as a single object; the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster. Two other objects are within this designation but not officially included, the Snowflake cluster and the Fox Fur nebula.
All of the objects are located in the constellation of Monoceros and are located about 720 parsecs or 2300 light years away from Earth. Due to its relative proximity and large size it is extremely well studied
The Snowflake Cluster was granted its name due to its unmistakable pinwheel like shape and assortment of bright colours. The Christmas Tree star formation consists of young stars obscured by heavy layers of dust clouds these dust clouds along with the hydrogen and helium are producing luminous new stars.
In this image the bright young stars are seen in the blue reflection nebula at the centre. The red nebulosity is emitting in the hydogen alpha spectrum and these two features indicate that we are in a star formation region.

Celestron C11 Edge HD Telescope
Hyperstar reducer for a focal length of 540mm at f/1.9.
ASI2600MC astronomical camera
Imaged from the Ottawa backyard in 2023 using ultra fast optics and specialized narrowbad filters with the Hyperstar mounted on the Celestron C11 telescope. The image is a stack of 62 x 180s second exposures with the ASI2600MC cooled camera and the L-Enhance filter. All processing in Pixinsight including the AI processes such as BlurX and StarX
