A love of the stars
As a child, I spent long Canadian winter nights gazing at the stars and imagining other worlds. Today, as a photographer, I collect their light. Using scientific filters, specialized cameras, motorized tracking and hours of accumulated exposures, I capture galaxies, nebulae, planets and our own Sun, revealing a universe too faint for the human eye to see. My work lives where art and science meet: grounded in real data, yet shaped to inspire. I hope to spark curiosity, joy and wonder, and a reminder that we are all part of this vast universe.

About Andrea
Andrea Girones is, by her own admission, obsessed with astrophotography.
A lifelong astronomer and eclipse chaser, she photographed the sky on film long before automated telescopes and digital cameras came along, and it took her a while to master the new technology. After a long break from the hobby to raise her two children, it was Comet NEOWISE that brought her back. In 2020, with her daughter’s help operating a modern DSLR, she captured her first digital image of the famous comet.
Since then, Andrea has spent far too much time, effort and disposable income refining her art. Her first NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) showed a solar filament magnetically tethered to the Sun. Her images have appeared on the covers of the Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) and the 2024 RASC Observer’s Calendar.
Her awards include the Astronomical League’s Williamina Fleming Award, a WITNS selection from the late Alyn Wallace, and the 2023 Imager of the Year at Starfest, where she was later invited to judge the competition. At the RASC Ottawa Centre, she is a two-time recipient of the Paul Comission Observer of the Year Award and has received the Rolf Meier Planetary Imager of the Year Award.
Solar imaging is a particular fascination, and she is a frequent invited speaker at astronomy conventions, societies and other organizations, including a recent appearance on the Astro Imaging Channel. She also serves on several national RASC committees.
